Earthquakes Near Lake Lanier Rattle Residents, No Significant Damage Reported

Near Lake Lanier, an earthquake was recorded on Thursday night, as per the United States Geological Survey. Residents in Buford, Suwanee, and around Lake Lanier reported feeling the tremors around 11:15 p.m. Alicia Phillips mentioned that the quake shook her entire home near Buford Dam, while Lyss Hawn, residing in south Forsyth County, also felt the rumble.

According to USGS reports, the earthquake measured 2.5 on the magnitude scale with a depth of 2.5 miles, indicating potential for very light damage. However, it was classified with moderate intensity for shaking and was likely felt by residents. The Georgia Tech Educational Earthquake Network’s seismograph detected the earthquake from Grant Park in Atlanta.

At 1:30 a.m., another earthquake occurred near the initial location, registering a magnitude of 2.1. This second quake had a depth of 5.3 miles and was rated with a level 4 intensity, suggesting a light amount of shaking may have been felt. However, no significant damage would have resulted from an earthquake of this magnitude.
