“Kashmir Leaders Divided Over PM Modi’s Election and Statehood Plans”

Leaders of most political parties in Kashmir have welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement about holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir soon and planning to restore its statehood in the near future. However, there have been mixed reactions in the Union Territory. Some parties feel that the PM should have provided a clear timeline to end the uncertainty.

The Supreme Court had already instructed the Centre and the Election Commission of India to conduct the assembly polls in J&K before September.

Imran Nabi Dar, spokesperson for the National Conference, welcomed PM Modi’s announcement regarding the elections and statehood restoration. However, he pointed out that there is still uncertainty about the actual dates. He mentioned that it’s positive that the PM has acknowledged that the decision to downgrade the state to a Union Territory was not widely accepted by the people. Dar noted that while the Centre has consistently promised to hold elections and restore statehood, a specific timeline has not yet been provided.

On the other hand, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described PM Modi’s statement as another promise without a substance. Aditya Gupta, the PDP youth vice-president, likened Modi’s assurances on elections and statehood to the unfulfilled promise of 15 lakh rupees in every citizen’s bank account, which has been a longstanding issue of contention.

In summary, while there is general approval among Kashmiri political leaders for the intent behind PM Modi’s announcement, concerns remain regarding the lack of a clear timetable for implementation.
