Mexico elections 2024- “Mexico Elects Claudia Sheinbaum as First Female President in Landmark Victory”

Sheinbaum, who will be the first woman to lead the Government of Mexico, obtained between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to the Quick Count, an exercise carried out by the INE based on a statistical sample of polling station reports to identify trends.

Behind Sheinbaum, nominated by the parties Morena, Labor, and the Green Party, was opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, from the National Action, Institutional Revolutionary, and Democratic Revolution parties, with between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote.

In third place was the candidate from the Citizen Movement party, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, with between 9.9% and 10.8% of the vote.

According to the Quick Count, voter turnout in the presidential elections was between 60% and 61.5% of the electorate.

In addition to the Quick Count, the INE has enabled the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), which is updated as polling station reports are captured. District vote counts will begin on Wednesday, from which the final election numbers will be obtained.

After Sunday’s voting, where approximately 20,000 positions were up for renewal across Mexico, the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Power (TEPJF) must receive and analyze any challenges to the process, and qualify the presidential election no later than September 6.

If the Tribunal validates the election, Sheinbaum will assume office on October 1, succeeding Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Her term will last six years, from 2024 to 2030.
